Project update news from Uganda

April 7 2008

Being involved in Africa, you very quickly realise that it isn't just about preaching and church work if you want to be effective in what you do. In order to truly reach people you have to recognise that man is body and soul and not just spirit. Therefore, practical projects feature very much in our ministry across the continent. The following is a report received from Uganda on the implementation of current projects.

'Carpentry Workshop. This is located in Kamod town centre and it is now fully operational and helping groups of youths in income generation and to be able to support themselves through the sale of furniture products that they make locally. They have been provided with all necessary tools for the work and the project is breaking the cycle of poverty among the youths and improving their living conditions and profitability in society as well as benefiting the locall communities. Schools, hospitals, churches etc place their orders for furniture such as wooden chairs, benches, doors, windows, cupboards  etc. The demand for such items is really high and the youths are very skilled and able to make these items for their customers and generate money on a daily basis through the sale of their products.

The provision of ox-ploughs to rural farmers. The farmers of Atiira sub-county in Soroti managed through their own efforts to acquire oxen but had been lacking ploughs for use. We purchased five good ploughs and provided to them as a facilitation support to help them increase the quality and quantity of crops they grow and improve food security in their families, which will re-establish their livelihoods. They are now busy in crop production and expect a good harvest this season.

Fishing boat and nets.  This project has been launched and is now operating in Bugondo landing site with four people employed as fisher-mongers. The project has one boat and 15 nets purchased and intends to generate income through the sale of fish to local consumers for sponsorship of 85 children who are desperately in need of education. Already we have identified five children and just sent them to school and they are now supported by the project with fees, uniform and other scholastic materials. The project will ensure that all selected children on the list will be sponsored as funds become available from the project income.'
